Badminton Rules : Quick Guide

Hi Badminton lovers,

Badminton can't be played and enjoyed unless we know its Rules.  So here we go. Let's focus on following basics of Badminton Game.

Badminton Rules

  • Scoring system:
3 Games of 21 points. As per the rule, for each serve there will be a point scored. At 20 - all , the side which gains 2 points lead first and wins the game.  If match is set to 30 then at 29-all , side gaining 2 points lead will win the match.
  • Interval and Change of Ends
Interval :  There is 2 minutes interval between each game of 21 points. Also, if leading score reaches 11 then there is 60 seconds( 1 minute) interval.

Change of Ends:  Players can offer change of Ends only if leading score reaches 11 points in the third game.

  • Singles : The following table gives us quick snap shot of the Single serving and receiving scenarios and rules. The point to remember here is when the sum of the scores is even then only service changes and if  service is done from the RSC always

Having covered scoring, intervals, singles and doubles, there is some more to look for while playing the badminton game.

  1. Service court errors  (SCE):
If player serves from wrong court side it is termed as SCE.  If discovered after the 1st serve, then this error shall not be corrected.
  1. Faults : The fault is declared in one of the following scenarios:
  • If the shuttle lands outside the boundaries of the court,
  • If the initial point of contact with the shuttle is not on the striker's side of the net
  • If player touches the net.
  • If player invades the side of the opponent court
  • If shuttle is hit twice in succession.
  1. Lets: 'Let' is called by the umpire, or by a player (if there is no umpire), to halt play.
  • If shuttle is caught in the net
  • server serves before the receiver is ready.
  • If, during play, the shuttle disintegrates and the base completely separates from the rest of the shuttle, is shall be a 'let'.
We are looking forward to your feedback and thoughts on this.
